Barbarians play first game in Wales
Wales has long been the spiritual home of the world renowned Barbarians and on 31 March, 1891, they made their first appearance on Welsh soil. Having been founded at a famous oyster supper in Bradford, they embarked on their first tour in December, 1890. They beat Hartlepool Rovers and drew with Bradford. The game against Swinton was abandoned because of frost.
The second tour was in March, 1891. Cardiff, still not a city nor the Welsh capital, hosted the first fixture at the Arms Park. The home side had an exhausting fixture list at the Easter period, playing three home games in the space of four days. They lost to Blackheath on Easter Saturday, 28 March, beat New Brighton on Easter Monday and then made history by becoming the first team to beat the Baa-Baas a day later.
Cardiff won and inflicted the first defeat on the guest team. They meet a further 113 times up to 1996, with Cardiff winning 70 and drawing six.
