Another Grand Slam for Wales
They had ended a 39 year wait for a fourth Grand Slam in 1950 and, under John Gwilliam’s captaincy once again, Wales made a clean sweep of the Five Nations Championship on Saturday, 22 March, 1952. It was another golden age for Welsh rugby with a win over the All Blacks to follow in 1953. Having secured the Triple Crown with a 14-3 win over the Irish in Dublin on 8 March, Wales went to St Helen’s to finish the job against the French. It was a tough day at the office and Wales couldn’t score a try. Lewis Jones kicked two penalties and Alun Thomas dropped a goal to secure a hard-fought 9-5 victory. Welsh fans would have to wait until 1971 for another Grand Slam.
