Wales hosts world’s first hockey international

The first hockey international took place on Saturday, 26 January, 1895, at Rhyl. Wales hosted Ireland and were beaten 3-0. Snow fell and Wales wore black shirts with the Prince of Wales feathers in gold. The Welsh team was:
-Goal J. Evans (Rhyl and Wrexham); backs, Griffiths (Rhyl), R. Jones (Huyton and Abergele); half-backs, J Evans (Rhyl, Flintshire), Bennett (Chester Military and Flintshire), Jaris Joaes (Sefton and Glamorgan); right wing, E. W. Powell (Oxford University and Montgomery), G. W. G. Casson (Oxford University and Festiniog); left wing, H. Hughes (Rhyl and Llangollen), J. Evans (Rhyl and Aberystwyth) centre, E. H. Parry (Rhyl, Flintshire).
