Colin Jones draws in Reno

On Saturday, 10 March, 1983, Colin Jones fought Milton McCrory for the vacant WBC world welterweight title at the Convention Center in Reno, Nevada. The Gorseinon fighter had already won the British, Commonwealth and European titles and battled to a draw over 12 rounds. The 21-year-old McCrory was unbeaten in 20 fights coming into the contest and Jones had one defeat against his record in 24 bouts. He had won 21 of his 23 fights with knock-outs. There were many who thought he should have been crowned world champion, but the judges ruled a tie. Here were their scores: Jose Juan Guerra 116 McCrory / 113 Jones; Newton Campos 114 / 116; Dimas Hernandez 115 / 115. The two men fought again five months later at the Dunes Hotel, Las Vegas, when McCrory won on a split decision.
