The Welsh Sports Hall of Fame – here to honour our sporting heroes
Welcome to the new-look Welsh Sports Hall of Fame website. We hope you will find it informative, entertaining and supportive of all-things to do with Welsh sport.
We’ve had so much to applaud this century and this year we’ve seen Team Wales bring back a record medal haul from the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast of Australia, Cardiff City, Cardiff Devils and Cardiff Blues bring back major trophies to the capital city and Jade Jones and Lauren Williams triumph at the European Taekwondo championships.
Almost everywhere you look there is a success story in one sport or another, male or female. The sporting industry in Wales keeps on growing. Our universities continue to produce top-quality sports coaches, physios, doctors and administrators, clubs at every level are improving facilities and growing participation, governing bodies are doing more than ever before to help increase numbers and quality and the local authorities, Sport Wales, Welsh Sports Association and the Welsh Government plays its part in guiding policy and providing funding.
Then there is us! Our exclusive ‘Roll of Honour’ has grown since the original 10 inductees were announced in 1990 and there are now 135 names from 26 different sports. It is quite a list.
More inductees will be announced at our annual ‘Roll of Honour’ dinner at the Village Hotel, Cardiff, on Wednesday, 20 June this year. It is always a special moment when the new names are revealed. The truth is there are so many outstanding candidates for inclusion that some have to wait longer than others. But we are fiercely proud of those great Welsh men and women we have already inducted. All have met our strict criteria for inclusion:
“Inclusion in the Roll of Honour is for those people who, by their achievement and by their example and conduct, in and beyond the sporting arena, have brought distinction to themselves and credit to Wales.”
In addition to our ‘Roll of Honour’, we also have a wonderful collection of Welsh sporting memorabilia. Much of this used to be on display at the Museum of Welsh Life at St Fagan’s. Some of it is currently on display at the Principality Stadium, where our collection is housed very kindly by the Welsh Rugby Union. Our dream is to one day be able to have it on permanent display to help demonstrate what a wonderful sporting nation we are. More than that, we want to use it to inspire our future sporting stars in as many sports as possible. They have some wonderful, world class footsteps in which to tread.
Our website will eventually carry full biographies of all of the members of our ‘Roll of Honour’. We will also keep you up to date with our work and post stories of historical significance. If you would like one of our team of writers to address a particular sporting story, incident or moment then get in touch with us via Twitter or contact us via the website (see Contact Us section).
If you’ve got some memorabilia you want checked out, or wish to donate, then once again get in touch and we’d love to have a chat about it to see what we can do. The Welsh Sports Hall of Fame is about the nation and for the nation.
