Welsh stars put boot into Springboks

Rob Cole

WSHOF Roll of Honour members Phil Bennett and Gareth Edwards scored all the points as the British & Irish Lions won the opening Test against South Africa in Cape Town 12-6 on 8 June, 1974. Bennett kicked three penalties and Edwards dropped a goal as Willie John McBride’s Lions side kicked off their 3-0 series triumph. The fourth and final Test wad drawn, but the Lions still remained unbeaten throughout their tour. Three other Roll of Honour inductees, JPR Williams, JJ Williams and Mervyn Davies, also played throughout the series.
