Irene helps to steer Britain to historic gold medal in the pool
Irene Steer became the first Welsh women to win an Olympic Medal on 15 July, 1912, when she helped the British 4 x 100 metre freestyle team strike gold in Stockholm. The British quartet set a world record time of 5 mins, 52.8 sec. Cardiff-born Steer was disqualified in the semi-finals of the individual event after colliding with another swimmer. This was the first time women had been invited to take part in swimming events at the Olympic Games.
