‘Gipsy’ Daniels KOs Max Schmeling

Rob Cole

William ‘Gipsy’ Daniels gained the perfect revenge for being outpoints by up and coming German heavyweight boxer Max Schmeling a few months earlier when he went to Frankfurt on Saturday, 25 February, 1928 and knocked out the future world champion in one round. Daniels, one of 13 children, was the son of former Wales rugby international forward David Daniel, who won eight caps while playing for Llanelli. ‘Gipsy’ launched his boxing career in 1919 and retired from the ring 165 fights later in 1938. Along the way he won the Welsh, British and Commonwealth light heavyweight titles.
