Calzaghe goes down, but bounces back in style

Rob Cole

Joe Calzaghe made the 13th successful defence of his WBO World Super Middleweight title against Byron Mitchell at the International Arena, Cardiff on 28 June, 2003. Calzaghe had to bounce back from being put on the canvas for the first time in his career in the opening round. That earned the American a fearsome onslaught and, in a pulsating second round, the Welshman knocked down Mitchell before the referee stepped in to stop the fight. It was the first time that Mitchell, a former WBA champion, had been stopped. The win made it 36 out of 36 as a pro fighter for Calzaghe.
