All-Welsh heavyweight clash at Maindy Stadium

The first British Heavyweight championship bout staged in Cardiff on August 27, 1956, featured two Welshmen – Joe Erskine and Johnny Williams. The fight took place at Maindy Stadium as the two men fought for the title vacated by Don Cockell. Cardiff-born Erskine won the title on points after 15 rounds.On the undercard, heavyweight Brian London knocked out Trevor Snell in the 2nd round.
