Suzy Drane was born in St Asaph, north Wales on 27 November 1986 and was educated at Christleton HS and Rydal Penrhos before heading south to attend what is now Cardiff Met Univetsity. She developed through the Welsh netball pathway, launching her club career at Chester before making her senior international debut at 18. She would go on to play for Wales for 15 years, winning more than 100 caps.

She captained the Welsh team for much of her international career and representing her country at the Commonwealth Games in 2014, 2018, 2022, as well as at multiple Netball World Cup competitions. Known as a dynamic mid-court player due to her leadership skills, vision, and incredible work ethic, Suzy proved to be the engine of the Welsh netball team during a golden era for the sport in Wales.

“Drane’s composure in traffic kept Wales alive in every tight contest”, wrote BBC Wales on her performances at the 2015 World Cup in Sydney. Former teammate Kyra Jones observed: “If you want to understand Welsh netball, you start with Suzy – she set the standards the rest of us followed.”

As a club player, she played for Celtic Dragons in the Netball Super League. She helped the club become one of the main contenders in the earliest years of the league and served as an example for young Welsh players. She was part of the team that reached the 2013 Super League Grand Final – still considered one of the franchise’s biggest accomplishments. Head coach Melissa Hyndman referred to Suzy as “the engine room of everything we did.” Her contribution also came off the field through her academic research regarding sport performance and coaching.

Suzy Drane retired from the international netball games in 2022. Drane’s experience and dedication to netball and Welsh sport make her an incredibly significant player in the history of Welsh netball.
