Steve Robinson
Steve Robinson became known as the ‘Cinderella Man’ after taking a world title fight at 24 hours notice. It was a rags to riches story that saw the Cardiff boxer head to the north east of England and defeat John Davison to claim the WBO World Featherweight title on 17 April, 1993. He may have won his title at short notice without having had a previous fight at that level, but he proved a worthy champion with seven successful defences of his title. He eventually lost his crown to England’s Naseem Hamed at the Arms Park on 30 September, 1995.
He became the EBU Featherweight Champion at the second attempt on 4 December, 1999 when he stripped John Jo Irwin of his crown. He then lost the title to Hungary’s István Kovács on 23 June, 2000. After retiring he opened a gym in Cardiff and became a highly respected trainer.
