Born in Morriston Hospital on 25 May, 1970, he was raised in Llanelli and educated at St John’s Lloyd RC School. He went right through the Welsh Schools system, representing his country at every age group, before joining the staff at Glamorgan in 1986. He made his county debut for Glamorgan in 1992 and earned the first of his 21 Test match caps against Pakistan in 1996.

When it comes to Welsh cricketing icons they don’t come any bigger than Robert Croft. He served Glamorgan as player, captain and coach for 28 seasons and holds the record for the most England Test caps and one day international appearances from the Welsh county. He went on four tours with England and two more with England A.

He became the first Welsh cricketer to score 10,000 runs and take 1,000 wickets in first-class cricket, ending up with 12,880 and 1,175. He was awarded his Glamorgan Cap in 1992 and was named as the county’s ‘Young Player of the Year’ in 1990 and 1992. He was voted ‘Glamorgan Player of the Year’ four times (1996, 2003, 2004, 2007) and was club captain 2003-2007. He was awarded a benefit year in 2000. In 2004 he won ‘The Weatherall Award’ as the leading all-rounder in the English first-class game.

His incredible career saw him take five wickets in a match 51 times and 10 wickets nine times on the first-class scene as he became arguably Glamorgan’s greatest all-round cricketer. He helped Glamorgan win the county championship in 1997, win three one day tournaments and the Second Division crown.

He was awarded an MBE in 2013 for his services to cricket.
