John Toshack played for Cardiff City at 16 and then went on to play for Liverpool after transferring to Anfield in a £110,000 move in 1970. At Liverpool he helped the club to win two First Division titles, the UEFA Cup on two occasions, the FA Cup and the UEFA Super Cup. He launched his management career at Swansea and took them from the Fourth to the First Division. From there he moved on to Portugal, where he was in charge of Sporting CP. He then headed to Spain, where he led Real Sociedad to the Copa del Rey in 1987. Two years later, he was appointed manager of Real Madrid and led them to a fifth consecutive La Liga title with a record total of points and goals scored.

Having made 40 appearances for Wales, scoring 13 goals, he became Wales manager 2004-10.
