Billy Meredith
The original Welsh footballing superstar, Billy Meredith won two FA Cup winners medals and played top flight soccer with Manchester City and Manchester United up to within five months of his 50th Birthday. His career spanned 31 years included 1,568 league and international matches, 50 of them for Wales.
He worked as a coal-miner and played football for his local club, Chirk before he signed as an amateur for Northwich Victoria at the age of 18. He then moved on to Man City in 1894, winning the first of his Welsh caps the next year. Despite his rapid advance as a player he continued to work underground during the week until 1896.
