‘Lynn the Leap’ sets British record in Berne

Lynn Davies became only the fourth man to clear 27ft in the long jump as he set his seventh and final British long jump record in Berne, Switzerland, on 30 June, 1968. The Welshman reached 8.23m to prove he was getting into shape to defend his Olympic title in Mexico City later that year. A certain Bob Beamon cropped up in Mexico to change Lynn’s plans, passing the 28ft barrier to jump over 29ft with his world record of 8.90m. Lynn’s best from Berne stood as the British record until 2002. In 2018 it was still the Welsh record after 50 years.
