Jones battles to bronze on world stage

Steve Jones won the bronze medal at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships at Meadowlands Racetrack, New Jersey, on Sunday, 25 March, 1984.It was the first individual medal won by an athlete wearing a Welsh vest in the senior men’s 12k race. England’s Tim Hutchings was second, two seconds ahead of Jones, and Portugal’s Carlos Lopes won the title having finished second in 1983. Maesteg-born Tony Simmons, who won silver for England at Chepstow Racecourse in 1976, returned to Welsh colours and finished 169th.
