Sheila Morrow

Hockey - 1990

Sheila Morrow was one of two women included among the ’10 Originals’ inducted onto the Roll of Honour in 1990. She won 112 caps for Wales in an outstanding 17 year international career that began in 1967 and ended in 1984. She played at five World Cups – 1969(Germany), 1971 (NZ), 1975(Scotland), 1979(Canada) and 1983 (Malaysia) – and was captain between 1982-94.

She won 24 caps for Team GB between 1978–1984 and captained the side in 1981-82. After she finished playing she became an Federation International Hockey Grade 1 Umpire and then an FIH Category 1 Technical Official. Among her most memorable appointments were being a Judge at the 2004 (Beijing) and 2008 (London) Olympic Games, Tournament Director 2012 Champions Trophy (Argentina) and Technical Officer 2010 World Cup (Argentina). She was a member of the Hockey Wales board from 2008-2017 and spent five years as a director of GB Hockey before taking over as President in April, 2017.

Having started life as a PE teacher in Cardiff (1968 – 1983), here she was head of PE at Lady Mary HS, she then became a Development Officer at the Sports Council for Wales (1983 – 1991). She moved on to become Head of Governing Body Services at the Sports Council and latterly Sport England (1991 – 2004). She also served on the committee of the Welsh Sports Hall of Fame.
