Martyn Woodroffe

Swimming - 2001

Martyn Woodroffe left his school desk in Cardiff to swim at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico. He took part in five events – 100 and 200 metres butterfly, 200 and 400 metres individual medley and in the 4 × 100 metres medley relay. He won the silver medal in the 200 butterfly in a time of 2 min, 9.0 sec behind Carl Robie of the United States. The great Mark Spitz, who went on to win seven gold medals four years later in Munich, came home last. Unsurprisingly, Woodroffe was made Wales Sports Personality of the Year in 1968.

He also represented Wales at the 1966 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Kingston, Jamaica, and the 1970 Games in Edinburgh, winning a silver and two bronze medals in Scotland. He became the National Performance Director for Swim Wales.
