David Winters was one of nine Welsh athletes who travelled to Perth, western Australia in 1962 to take part in the inaugural Commonwealth Paraplegic Games. The celebration attracted 89 athletes from nine nations and Winters won a bronze medal in the Team Sabre fencing competition. He went on to become a highly successful and highly respected participant and administrator in the disabled sports sector. He won many medals at major games and was an inspiration to his peers. He also became a member of the Sports Council for Wales.
