Bryn Jones
Bryn Jones was part of the footballing dynasty from Merthyr than spawned five brothers who all played football at a high level football, and their four sons who followed in their footsteps. Bryn played 17 times for Wales between 1935-48 and figured in a further eight wartime internationals. He hit the headlines in 1938 when Arsenal paid a then world record fee of £14,000 to buy him from Wolves.
The eldest of the five brothers was Will John (Shoni), who played for Aberdare and Ton Pentre when they were part of the Football League. He also played in a Welsh Cup final with Ton Pentre. Ivor was the first ‘Jones Boy’ to earn international recognition, winning 10 caps. He was signed by Merthyr Tydfil FC and went on to play for Swansea Town and West Bromwich Albion. Emlyn was also snapped up by Merthyr Town in 1933, but six weeks later he transferred to Everton. He then moved on to Southend, playing over 500 games for them, and also spent time at Barrow. Bryn was next off the rank, with Bert being scouted by Aston Villa just before the outbreak of WW2, in which he lost his life.
Bryn played at inside-forward for Arsenal either side of WW2. He was bought by George Allison to take over the goal scoring duties following the retirement of Scotland’s Alex James. He fired in three goals in his first four games, but ended with only eight in 76 appearances. After serving in the Royal Artillery in WW2, Bryn returned to Highbury aged 34. He made seven appearances in Arsenal’s 1947-48 title-winning season before moving on to Norwich City in June, 1949.
