Tony Lewis
Tony Lewis captained Glamorgan to their County Championship triumph in 1969 and also went on to skipper England. One of the last men to captain England on his debut, Lewis led the MCC on their tour of India in 1972-73. He got a duck on his debut, but then guided England to victory with 70 not out in the second innings on Christmas Day. He added his only Test century (125) at Kanpur later in that series, playing in nine Tests all tolled. He was captain on eight occasions.
He represented the Welsh Secondary Schools at cricket for five years and captained them for three summers. His Glamorgan debut came in 1955 at the age of 17 against Leicestershire while still a pupil at Neath Grammar School. After doing his national service in the RAF,he established himself in first-class cricket during his first year at Christ’s College, Cambridge in 1960. He scored 1,307 runs for Cambridge University at 43.56, followed by 616 runs at 30.80 when he played for Glamorgan later in the season. He captained Cambridge in his final season at university in 1962, when in all matches he made 2,188 runs at 40.51, with five centuries. He also topped 2,000 runs in 1966, when he made 2,190 runs, more than anybody else in the season, including his only double-century, 223 against Kent at Gravesend. He captained Glamorgan from 1967 to 1972, taking the county to its second championship in 1969 with an undefeated campaign.
A talented all-rounder, he was first violinist in the National Youth Orchestra of Wales and also won a rugby blue at Cambridge. He also played club rugby for Neath and Gloucester. He sat on the MCC committee from 1967 to 2011 and he created, and chaired from 2006-2011, the MCC World Cricket Committee. He initiated MCC research into the use of a pink ball in Day/Night Test matches and was the MCC President 1998–2000.In 2011 he was the status of Honorary Life Vice-President of MCC, only the 31st in the club’s history.
As Chairman of the Wales Tourist Board, he led the successful bid to bring the 2010 Ryder Cup to the Celtic Manor. He served as the High Sheriff of Mid Glamorgan for 1998 and was awarded the CBE for services to cricket, broadcasting and Wales, in the 2004 New Year Honours.
