Dutch beaten on countback

Jeff Hopkins hit 71 runs as Wales won their first ICC Trophy Group B Match on 22 and 23 May, 1979. The brother of Glamorgan batsman John, Jeff played four times for Middlesex and played for Wales in the 1979 tournament. Wales batted first in the 60 overs contest and scored 170. When the Dutch side batted they reached 59-2 in 30 overs before bad weathered cut the game short. Wales won by 15 runs via countback to their score at the equivalent last completed over by them in their innings. The game against Sri Lanka was washed out and Hopkins then score 92 in a victory over Israel. Wales then lost to USA and missed out on a semi-final place.
