Cliff Jones

Football - 1998

Perhaps the most famous of the Jones clan from Merthyr, Cliff signed for Swansea Town in the early 1950s as he followed in the footsteps of his ‘Uncle Bryn’ of Arsenal and Wales fame (Roll of Honour inductee 2004). After making 168 appearances for Swansea, the little wing wizard transferred to Tottenham Hotspur in 1958 for £35,000. He became a regular member of the Spurs first team, partnering Jimmy Greaves in the real glory days for Spurs. He was part of the double winning team of 1961 and 1962, and in the side that won the first European Cup Winners Cup in England. The 1961 FA Cup final win over Leicester City was their first in 40 years.

In 1970, after more than a decade at White Hart Lane, and the small matter of 159 goals in 378 appearances, he signed for Fulham, where he eventually retired from the game. He won 59 caps for Wales, including playing in all five matches at the 1958 World Cup, and he scored 16 goals. At his best, he was considered to be among the best left wingers in the game.
